So, we were chatting with our new students today over lunch. Today was their first day, so we were just getting to know them a bit. When it got to one guy's turn, he asked if we wanted the short version or the long one. We all agreed to hear the long version, as we have all week together.
His life has taken a number of wild turns over the years, but the wildest was this:
He and his wife adopted a baby girl thirty-some years ago. They had a wonderful time raising her and the family is very close. In the mid 1990's the parents were contacted by a social worker who had a request by their daughter's birth mother to try to contact her. The girl was of age and all parties were interested, so they arranged to meet. They all loved this woman, who had given up her baby so many years ago. She became a really close friend of the family and they would travel to see each other at least once a year.
In the year 2000, our student and his wife were boating on a river when they came upon an unexpected fallen tree, hidden out of view around a bend, in a nasty section of fast current. They hit the tree at full-force and were both thrown from the boat. Tragically, his wife didn't survive the accident. It was a terrible, terrible thing.
A year later, however, he fell in love with and married his daughter's birth mother. His dear daughter can truly claim two wonderful mothers. How cool is that?
